What gets your motor running?

auto t-shirtAmong tomorrow’s famous birthdays, I see that the mighty Corvette has made Wednesday’s list. The speedy muscle car (born in 1953) is celebrating right along-side Fantasia (from American Idol) and Mike Tyson (fresh off his hilarious cameo appearance  in last year’s blockbuster flick). Pretty good company, eh? Happy birthday, mighty Corvette! I bet Fantasia and Iron Mike each own a ‘vette (or two, in Mike’s case, maybe three?).

Now that summer’s in the air, people love to gear up in their car-themed gear. Whether it’s auto racing or vintage cars, America is car crazy. When the days are long, people love working on cars and cruising the streets. Feel free to fuel your passion too. Let the world know how you roll.

CafePress donates to Gulf relief efforts. Please help show your support.

While others point fingers (especially that finger), let’s instead make a point: We all care.

Through July 31, 2010 simply purchase merchandise tagged with “gulf oil” from the CafePress Marketplace and we’ll donate an amount equal to 10% of the final purchase price* to the Gulf Restoration Network. This organization is working to protect and restore the natural resources of the Gulf region.

You can also help out when you create Gulf relief themed designs, and offer them to people who want to raise awareness. If you don’t already have one, open a free shop and create designs. Be sure to tag them with “Gulf oil” to be included in the portal.

The damage to their environment is astounding (and we probably don’t even know the half of it yet). But let’s not wait until the people in charge sort it out. Let’s get some funds flowing as swiftly as the water once flowed into the Gulf. Show your support on T-shirts, bumper stickers and other products and help raise awareness for the plight.

* An amount equal to 10% of the final purchase price for all products tagged with “Gulf Oil” and sold through CafePress.com Marketplace during June 21, 2010 through July 31, 2010 will be donated to the Gulf Restoration Network (http://healthygulf.org/).

Greetings from the International T-shirt Day celebration in New York City (corner of Passion Street & Statement Boulevard).

We’re proud to have helped bring self-expression to light this week. Thanks to everyone who attended the New York City International T-shirt Day festivities. There was a runway (with props for a photo op), a T-shirt makeover station, delicious snacks, open bar, great music, T-shirts galore & a lot of mingling.

It was a great time had by one-and-all!  Special shout out goes to the T-shirt Doctors from Sew Fast Sew Easy!  They were on hand to give T-shirts a makeover by cutting, sewing, and generally bedazzling them for an even more-fashionable look.

The tradition of International T-shirt Day started in 2008, with the lofty goal of bringing the community together to honor the most universal garment –  the T-shirt!

Emerging sport makes, er … a splash …

Even with all the fanfare over World Cup soccer matches in South Africa, another great sporting event is now simultaneously rising to the top of our collective national consciousness: Beer pong.

Yes, Atlantic City, New Jersey was the host of last week’s World Beer Pong Tour Championships. According to reports, a great time was had by one-and-all. It was especially enjoyable for two righteous dudes from Sacramento, CA who split the $25,000 first prize (FYI, $25,000 will buy you a lot of beer). In all, $50,000 in prizes were awarded (which will buy you twice as much beer – check my math … I’ve been playing beer pong since breakfast).

In case you don’t know, beer pong is sport/game/way of life/religion where people stand at opposite ends of the table tossing ping pong balls into their opponent’s 10 beer-filled plastic cups. The rules are simple: When you sink ’em, they drink ’em. Needless to say, it’s popular among fraternity brothers and tailgaters. And bloggers.

Lil’ cuss has a kick to him

Word on the street in South Africa (perhaps a cuss word?) is that prior to the USA-England World Cup soccer match Saturday, the Brazilian referee and his assistants took a “crass course” on English-language obscenities.

Apparently English star Wayne Rooney (among others, on both teams) has been know to swear a blue streak. This could have lead to a yellow or red card – if the referees knew what he was saying (Rooney didn’t get one in the game). Plus the refs were also brushing up on obscene gestures favored but the English-speaking countries. Chances are, they would get the general gist of any of those.

Anyway, it was a great game and those at home (or office?) wearing their soccer t-shirts and gear are in for a big treat as the potty-mouthed matches continue.

So adios (don’t worry, it’s “goodbye” in Spanish, not a curse word). Back to the web … to stream some more soccer matches.

Alan Wake Design Contest Winners

The CafePress community and Alan Wake fans has outdone itself with the Alan Wake Design Contest. Each entry was more eerie than the last, which is perfectly fitting for our starring character. We thank every participant for taking the time to put down the controller and share their visions – we’re sure it was good rest for those hand cramps.

Participants were split by the category of their choice: Evil, Bright Falls, Alan Wake and Book Cover Design for “Departure”.  Without further ado, here are our t-shirt design winners!

Our t-shirt design winners all get a fabulous prize package which includes an Xbox 360™ Elite game console, Alan Wake Xbox game (signed by developers), Alan Wake book, and $100 CafePress Gift Certificate.

Book Cover Category: If Alan Wake remembered writing his book “Departure”, we’re sure he would’ve been proud to choose his book cover from the following winning designs.

Dan McCall of Immortal Threads is our first place winner in the book cover design category with his design. He will be taking home a Limited Edition Custom Xbox 360™ Elite game console, Alan Wake Xbox game (signed by developers), Alan Wake book, and $100 CafePress Certificate.

No socks (but yes, other “near-perfect” gear).

While listening to a talk radio show recently, their “on-air personalities” (no comment) discussed baseball’s near-perfect game controversy surrounding umpire Jim Joyce. The show’s host mentioned that people were so steaming mad, that at CafePress you could buy anti-Joyce designs on “socks and T-shirts and stuff.”

Well, while we don’t sell socks (yet?), it is true that our community is up-in-arms about the hullabaloo too… and is creating near-perfect game designs to show their wrath.

In case you haven’t heard, the Detroit Tiger’s Armando Galarraga retired the first 26 batters in a game last week. He only needed one more measly out for a “perfect game.” Unfortunately, a rather-routine groundball resulted in the pitcher covering first base and the runner was erroneously called safe. It would have been only the 21st perfect game in modern baseball history.

TV reviews clearly show that the runner was out. Blown call. No perfect game. Ouch. Sorry Jim, I guess it’s true – no one is perfect? Including the barefooted hosts of local talk radio shows.

A great day for cone heads

ice cream lover Hot enough for ya? I got a cool solution: Just grab an ice cream cone and chill. Think of it as a celebration, as well as a warm-weather treat.

Yes, historical buffs (with a sweat tooth), today marks the anniversary of the very first ice cream parlor in America. Although Persians enjoyed syrups cooled in snow as far back as 400 BC, it wasn’t until this date in 1786 that the rage made its commercial debut in New York City. The rest is history – with a cherry on top.

Today ice cream is a universal favorite of everyone from kids in sticky bibs to smartly aproned executive desert chefs at swanky five-start restaurants. It’s also pretty popular around my house, where a carton of Rocky Road is usually front-and-center in the ice box. Wanna spoon?
