The Oscars: Awesome or Ho-Hum?

Academy award t-shirtThe Oscars were on last night (if you cared to watch, if not, no bigs) and were probably the most predictable they’ve been in a while.  The King’s Speech won a lot of top awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor Colin Firth, who wanted to do a dance on stage but waited until he got backstage (Whyyy? A fox trot would’ve made things so much more exciting!). Natalie Portman, Christian Bale and Melissa Leo rounded out the rest of the top acting awards.

Other highlights included pretty dresses on the red carpet (Thank you Michelle Williams, <3 you 4everz), the man-love bickering of Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr. while presenting, and James Franco’s adorable nana on camera.

Hmmm, what else. Yawn. Well, I guess it was that great of a show. BUT, that shouldn’t stop you from checking out all of the great movies in the history of moviedom, past and present, Oscar winners or nominees. There are some gems out there that sparkle on the screen and in your hearts. Corny, but true.

Thom Yorke Dances to the Beat of His (and Beyonce’s) Own Drum.

Bands like Radiohead don’t come along very often. Part sheer musical talent, part innovative leaders in creating new genres, Radiohead – and lead singer Thom Yorke in particular – definitely have that freedom of creative expression thing down.

Off of their new album, The King of Limbs, their latest music video for the song “Lotus Flower” features Yorke dancing in a room by himself. And I use the word dancing very loosely here. His movements automatically make me think of a variety of birds having seizures. Then his facial expressions remind me that he is in fact human but maybe very confused as to where he is. Other highlights of the video include Yorke losing his balance when trying to find a good place to sit down at 3:05, and driving an out-of-control lawnmower around 4:25.

Not only has this music video gone a buzz on the waves of YouTube and video websites galore, but also many parody songs have followed. One such amazing video features him dancing to Beyonce’s “Single Ladies,” which I’ve included here.

You’re welcome.

Whatever the bands or singers you love, music is a huge form of expressing who you are. Thom Yorke is a great artist for having the guts to dance like this. I know Seinfeld’s Elaine Benes would agree.

Bieber Fever Gets a Snip Here, Snip There.

barber t-shirtAs most pre-teen girls know by now, heartthrob Justin Bieber has unveiled a brand-spanking-new hairstyle. By all accounts, the Twilight crowd is on the fence so far on whether the haircut is destined to be an icon or an eye-sore. But in terms of making headlines, the teen singer’s new ’do is right up there with the such trend-setting coiffured luminaries as Jennifer Aniston, Princess Diana & Tom Brady (who took a few cheap shots recently for his haircut that was so Justin Bieber).

Looking for a more mature look, Justin has gone to a shorter & spikier cut, with the hair out of his eyes. And (OMG!), rumor has it he’s auctioning off his fallen locks to raise money for charity. Also, if you’re keeping score at home, note that more than just a pretty face, Justin Bieber is a pretty good athlete. During the recent NBA basketball All-Star Game festivities, he was voted the MVP in the celebrity basketball game (although I didn’t see the game, so if he was covered by Selena Gomez then I take that back).

Baseball Gets Into Full Swing

Spring training onesie

With Spring Training camps springing up all over Arizona and Florida, it must be time for baseball again (yea!). Yep, the Boys of Summer are now lacing ’em-up and doing their Boys of Spring thing in the Cactus and Grapefruit leagues.

Not to brag (OK, just a little), but my San Francisco Giants won the 2010 World Series and are ready to defend the title for the first time since … well, since forever. It’s going to be an exciting season. And if you’re keeping score at home, I’m also rooting for the Oakland A’s and Chicago Cubs, and heading to Phoenix for a few days next month to watch the Cincinnati Reds in training camp with my family (Dad is a die-hard red legs fan from way-back).

If you have a favorite team (or a favorite team to razz), don’t be shy. Show people exactly how you feel in no uncertain terms with fun baseball-themed products. It’s also a great way to strike up a conversation with people on the streets (or base paths). Play ball!

Three Days Off to See I Am Number Four

I Am Number Four t-shirtWith an extended weekend for President’s Day on the horizon, that means some extras all around. Another day of sleeping in, hanging out with friends, seeing a movie and my personal favorite, going out to eat. (Thanks for being born, Abe. You too George.)

Speaking of movies. Tomorrow marks the premiere of I Am Number Four, part action/adventure flick, part teen romance, and all parts gorgeous new young stars in the form of Alex Pettyfer and Glee’s Dianna Agron. I Am Number Four follows John, a teen with extraordinary powers, who is on the run from evil forces who are out to kill all nine like him. One, two and three are toast. Which means, John is…yup. Next on the hit list. Crud.

So what are these evil forces coming for Number Four, and why? Well, go have a watch, and let us know what you think. Whatever you think of the movie, at least we can put his pretty face on a t-shirt.

Watson, Our Geography is in Jeopardy.

computer t-shirtCongratulations to IBM’s supercomputer, Watson, for winning the Jeopardy showdown. The specially-created hunk of metal, silicon and old parts from the Star Trek Enterprise easily defeated the show’s all-time top two human contestants.

However, proving that computers are not always right, Watson did have a few hiccups. Like in the category of “U.S. Cities,” answering (or is it questioning?) with the response “Toronto.” I guess they didn’t preload Yahoo! Maps into its software …

Still, it looks like it’s only a matter of time until computers start doing the thinking for us. I just hope my jetpack doesn’t erroneously take me to Canada.

A Tip O’ the Leash to the Best in Show Dog

Scottish deerhound thermosTalk about a great day at the… can you call a dog show an office? The Westminster Kennel Club’s annual dog show, which brings together more than 2,500 award-winning canines to compete for the coveted champion title of Best in Show, was held this past Monday and Tuesday. And yesterday, one special dog was crowned with that woof-derful title of Best in Show.

Her name is Grand Champion Foxcliffe Hickory Wind, “Hickory” for short (and to her friends). Hickory is the first Scottish deerhound to win the coveted title. When she’s not traveling on the road showing, most of her days are spent on a quiet 50-acre farm in Virginia where she can chase furry little animals and frolick in the fields. Playing on a farm, eating, sleeping and getting love and attention all day from admirers? A dog’s life sounds like the life for me.

Other breeds that made it into the winner’s circle included a bearded collie named Mister Baggins (maybe related to Frodo or Bilbo?), Jayne, a very cute and rolly Chinese Shar-Pei, and a black cocker spaniel named Beckham.

Whatever the breed, dogs are pretty awesome, and make fun, loyal friends. So go out for a walk with your best four-legged bud. And don’t forget the dog bowl.

Grey’s Anatomy Scrubs to Benefit Children in Need

Grey's Anatomy scrubsAre you a Grey’s Anatomy fan? You have to give them credit – those nurses and doctors look pretty good walking around in those OR scrubs and saving lives all in a day’s work. Well, whether actor, nurse, doctor or fan, we’re paging you over the loudspeakers – letting you know you can now have your own official Grey’s scrubs!

In collaboration with ABC and Barco Uniforms, CafePress has opened the official Grey’s Anatomy flagship store, where you’ll find the complete collection of scrubs in a variety of colors and complimentary styles.

The even better part – with every $25 purchase of these very cool scrubs, $1 is donated to Barco’s Nightingales Foundation, which aids children in need of medical care, as well as supports and honors the spirit and contributions of nurses across the U.S. and beyond. Tonight’s episode will also include an on-air mention of Barco’s Nightingales Foundation, with a PSA from McSteamy himself (Eric Dane) spreading the good word about the Foundation.

I don’t know what could be cooler than showing off your fan pride and benefitting kids and nurses at the same time. For next week’s episode, don those scrubs and see what Meredith, McDreamy, and Seattle Grace are up against next week. Stat.

$15 T-Shirt Commemorates QB’s Signature Move

Green bay packers t-shirtAs Packer fans know (and the rest of the world found out repeatedly on Super Bowl Sunday), Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers celebrates touchdowns by wrapping his hands around the front & back of an imaginary “Championship Belt.”

Championship Belts are the huge, gaudy-gold belts professional wrestlers and boxers wear when holding the title. After the game, fellow Packers star Clay Mathews even placed a real Championship Belt on Rodgers’ shoulders to pay homage to his signature celebration.

To commemorate Green Bay’s earning of the 2011 gridiron championship, we’re featuring a Special Edition T-shirt with simple instructions on how to perform Aaron Rodgers’ slick move. Available for just $15 until February 9, this T-shirt is sure to earn you a high-five from football fans. Plus it will spark a conversation with people who may not be well-versed in Packers lore. Either way, score your T-shirt and score points with fans of self-expression.
