A Double Dip on Personalizing Products

We like to push the boundaries of personalization.

The figurative and literal boundaries, because after all, we’re all about printing here at CafePress.

We have some new capabilities to take personalizing products to the next level. When shopping at CafePress, take “personal” to the next level with our personalizable designs on everything from business cards to t-shirts. On select products you’ll see the option to modify the text, image or photo. The “I Heart Joey” t-shirt can now say “I Heart Danny” if Danny is who you love! Products eligible will be marked with a Personalize icon so be on the lookout. For those of us (like myself) who were not graced with the graphic design gene, this is a perfect option for choosing a great design and adding a unique element to it at the same time. The best of both worlds in one shebang!

If you’re using CafePress to shop for anything from stationery and business cards to funny t-shirts, and you come across a design you really love, but want that extra pizzazz that screams your name (without hurting your vocal chords) – add your own personal touch. Here’s something to chirp about:

In this example, you can add your own text, and voila! Use this tool to put on your creative cap and make imaginative and professional business cards, birth announcements for your bun in the oven, or save the dates for that special day coming up. Meanwhile, we’ll keep pushing the limits of personalized printing!

Cultural Barometer Weekly Hotlist: A Full-On Royal Wedding, Marathons & More.

royal wedding t-shirtTeary-eyed wedding shoppers are making their presence (and presents?) known this week, as England’s Royal Wedding is set for this Friday. Ditto for British flag designs. It’s a major event on everyone’s radar, and check out the coolest pair of Royal Wedding underwear seen on The View and for those of you waking up at the crack of dawn to watch the nuptials; a pair of pajamas will do the trick. Hopefully the royal couple can get hitched without a hitch. We send our best to the Prince and future Princess.

Also trending high (as weather starts to improve), are marathon (and particularly half marathon) designs. Looks like some of those New Year’s Resolutions are coming into play. Eat a banana for us.half marathon t-shirt

Still gaining momentum with no end in site is Obama 2012 – with both pro-Obama and anti-Obama racking up sales. And as the Pacific Earthquake & Tsunami relief effort continues, CafePress shopkeepers and shoppers continue to show support with Japan relief products.

Shopkeeper Spotlight – Japan Relief Takes Flight

Japan tsunami sweatshirtWhile most 9-year old boys are consumed by the latest video games and animated movies, Miles Gould has a more meaningful passion: Raising money for the 100,000+ children displaced by the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

After first learning of the devastation, Miles knew in his heart-of-hearts that he had to help these kindred spirits. A whiz at origami (the ancient Japanese art of paper folding), Miles had a brilliant fundraising idea and enlisted the help of his family & teacher. He organized his friends and classmates to make colorful origami airplanes (Miles instructed them in the plane construction, of course). These artwork planes were then auctioned off – with 100% of the net proceeds going to the Japan relief effort.

The fundraiser was so successful (and heart-warming), it was spotlighted on both his local TV station and newspaper. Miles’ mother also helped set up a CafePress shop, The Big Paper Plane Tsunami Save, where people are able to purchase products featuring a specially-created design commemorating the fundraiser.

You can read about Miles’ wonderful endeavor on their Facebook page, or you can visit their shop. This shop is living proof that whether you’re big or small, you can make a huge difference in our world. Thank you Miles, from everyone at CafePress.

How YOU Helped Raise $113,000+ for Japan Relief

japan relief t-shirtIts official, and the numbers are in – together our community raised more than $113,000 for Japan relief efforts!

In the wake of the 8.9-magnitude earthquake and resulting tsunami that hit Japan on March 11th, CafePress shopkeepers rallied support with relief designs within hours, a percentage proceeds of which we’ve earmarked to aid ongoing relief efforts! In addition to designs from the community, we also designed a special edition Japan relief t-shirt; $10 from each t-shirt sold was donated.

Congratulations everyone! Your designs and your support helped make a difference – and we’d like to say thank you for your kindness, time, thoughts and efforts. It’s truly amazing to see a community unite for such a great cause.

Cultural Barometer Report Weekly Hotlist: Easter, All My Children & More

Once the most widely-recorded TV show in America, ABC has sadly pulled the plug on All My Children after 41 years. Loyal soap opera fans from Pine Valley to Manhattan are flocking to CafePress to purchase Erica Kane-themed gifts and other sentimental reminders.

Easter-themed products are also hopping, with parents creating adorable baskets for the April 24th holiday. There’s going to be a lot of smiles come Sunday morning (at about 6:00 a.m., yawn).

No surprise, the Japan relief effort is still on people’s minds and opening their hearts (and pockets) to help. As the number of casualties and suffers continue to rise, so does the sales of merchandise showing support.Sad Panda toddler t-shirtSnoopy Easter t-shirtErica Kane magnet

CafePress New Product Alert: Shot Glasses

Star Wars shot glass

Not actual size of shot glass. Although that would be cool if it were.

We like your CafePress shopping experience to be like your favorite adult beverage: no bite, with a smooth finish. And now, we may be able to help you with that when it comes to your drinks too.

Introducing one of CafePress’s newest product additions – shot glasses! You can now find a plethora of cool designs to add a little flair to your next party.

Long gone are the days of traveling on vacations collecting clear shot glasses as your trip souvenir. Although hokey can be awesome (who doesn’t love a cactus-shaped shot glass?), sipping your favorite aperitif from one that you designed yourself has an added element of satisfaction to enjoy along with your drink. Gift stores around the nation may get jealous.

And with wedding season almost here, think of the great bachelor and bachelorette parties that will benefit from personalized shot glasses. They’ll certainly get some good attention (and maybe a free drink or two?), and could make some great party favors.

Our shot glasses are made of premium ceramic and come in two different colors, all white and white with a black interior for those mystery drinks.

So take a load off this weekend and enjoy responsibly. We’ll hold you to it.

Cultural Barometer Weekly Hotlist: General Hospital and More

Hot off the press, we’re whetting your appetite with the coolest designs trending this week.

It’s pretty amazing to see how people come together to aid others in their times of need. Our community continues to support Japan relief with inspiring designs, which speaks volumes about lending a helping hand for those who cannot reach out themselves.

As Autism awareness month continues, we’ve seen and heard an outpouring of education and advocacy through true stories from some of our own shopkeepers – take a look at their unique stories and their shops, which has some amazing designs in them.

We have a soft spot for geeks-turned-mafia men. And so do a lot of CafePressers – this week the beloved kooky character of Damian Spinelli of General Hospital fame got a lot of attention. CafePress Employee Picks: The Word Wizard, Darrell J

When we smell exotic & enticing food coming from one of the CafePress kitchens, it’s often Darrell warming up some left-overs. “It’s not that I love cooking so much,” says Darrell, a Senior Writer here at CafePress. “It’s that I love to eat so much … and someone has to cook it.”

He also likes to hit the gym during lunch whenever possible, which rules out getting chefs from our local restaurants to cook for him at noontime. “When I cook at night I always cook in volume, since I know I’ll need lunch left-overs for the next day-or-two. Or three.”

With the next meal on his mind, Darrell often to gravitate towards foodie themed designs from CafePress. Here are a few that have caught his eye and whet his appetite.

Darrell’s Picks:

Propane grills have their place, but my T-bone likes charcoal.

Autism Awareness month update

Over the past 24 hours we’ve received messages from the community expressing concern for our decision to donate a percent of proceeds from Autism related products to Autism Speaks.

The response we’ve received takes us a bit by surprise, as this is our third year partnering with Autism Speaks and the first year we’ve heard concerns voiced about any specific organizations and their approach. Autism Speaks has always been a fantastic partner, and while some sentiment towards our partnership has been negative, much of it has been positive as well.

That said, as a community-based business we feel it is important to listen and respond to our users’ concerns. In this case, our community helped us to understand an adjustment to this program is needed.  We have learned a lot about Autism in the process and feel privileged to be a part of the national conversation about supports for individuals and families facing the challenge of Autism.

For this year we’ve already made a commitment to Autism Speaks, and we do not intend to go back on our promise to them, but we do want to add another charitable organization to split the total money donated and balance our support to the other Autism related good works.

We’re asking you to help us choose an additional partner for our Autism based support that will receive ½ of the money raised through sales of Autism related goods. If you’re interested in voting, or want to suggest one not on our list, please visit our Autism Awareness survey.

Update – a few folks have inquired about whether there is a way to opt out of the donation program altogether. Yes, since all of the donations are made based on sales through the CafePress Marketplace, opting out of the Marketplace will prevent sales of your merchandise from resulting in a donation. To learn more about opting out of the Marketplace click here.
