Nothing says Christmas like an ugly Christmas sweater

It was Christmas morning, 1983. I was a 10-year-old Star Wars junkie (and now I’m a 39-year-old Star Wars junkie) eagerly anticipating what awesome Star Wars toys were awaiting me under the Christmas tree.

Would I find an Imperial Shuttle? Perhaps the B-Wing Fighter was perched under the tree with its S foils extended. Or maybe the Ewok Village was all set up with my Ewoks, replaying the scene where Luke, Han, and Chewie were going to be barbequed to appease the Gods.

No.

Okay, so yeah, I did get the Imperial Shuttle and the B-Wing fighter (I ended up getting the Ewok Villiage and other items later), but the real disappointment was something else.

Sure, I was used to getting a dress shirt and tie with some slacks and dress socks that would reside in my closet never to be seen again. Or even a new rain jacket and rain boots. I always did like getting a wallet, but I always seemed to get 4-5 wallets every Christmas, which was annoying. Or even the random, bizarre toy was acceptable.  But this was different. This was just… ugly.

I picked it up out of the box and there it was. It might have been the ugliest thing I’d ever seen. It was a big, woolly, burgundy sweater with a giant white reindeer on it. And it had black and burgundy stripes on the sleeves. It was simply hideous, but because it was from my grandmother, I had to wear it for Christmas dinner. Luckily I was able to replay the Battle of Endor all day, but I knew that sweater laid in wait for me.

Guests started to arrive and my mother told me to get dressed. So I did, but I didn’t wear the sweater. She didn’t notice at first, until my grandmother arrived. She asked, “Where is your new sweater? Why aren’t you wearing it? Go put it on.” Ugh.

Of course everyone thought I was so handsome in my new sweater, but I knew how horrible it was. I knew the shame of wearing this sweater. I knew no good could come of it. It was incredibly itchy, hot, and uncomfortable. I hated it and begged to take the sweater off, but my mother said no.

Sweaters still make me twitch to this day…

So in honor of every child of the 80s who was forced to wear an ugly sweater to Christmas dinner, I give you our Ugly Sweater T-Shirt collection. Relive the humor of the moment, head out to an Ugly Christmas Sweater party, or just get one because they’re retro. Seems like the 80s is back anyway, mullets, bad mustaches, and ugly sweaters. It’s a trifecta of horribleness!

Wear this t-shirt with pride and know you can take it off whenever you want to. Your mom can’t tell you what to do anymore…

Mary Had a Little…Turkey?

What is the link between the nursery rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb” and Thanksgiving? An American writer named Sara Josepha Hale. Hale is not only the author of the celebrated nursery rhyme, but also the one to raise a near 30-year campaign to make Thanksgiving a national holiday. She even published recipes for turkey, stuffing, pumpkin pie, cranberry sauce, and much more, of which eventually became the modern day Thanksgiving essentials. Believe it or not, the Pilgrims did not have turkey nor pumpkin pie on their dinner tables during the first Thanksgiving.

During this time of year, we are encouraged to reflect, give thanks to what we have, and feast! This tradition dates back to 1621, where the Plymouth colonists (more popularly known as Pilgrims) celebrated their first successful harvest with their Wampanoag Indian friends. This 3-day celebration was eventually recognized as the first Thanksgiving. This year, whether you plan to feast like there’s no tomorrow, thumb through stacks of Black Friday ads, catch some football, or simply enjoy the company of your family and loved ones, there’s a t-shirt for that! Take a gander at some of our super fun Thanksgiving t-shirts.

Open Letter to USA Congress – Budget Savings Proposal

TO:                     United States House of Representatives

FROM:               CafePress

SUBJECT:          Budgetary Savings Proposal – Government Portraiture

DATE:                 November 14, 2012

USA House of Representatives,

As you know, many Americans are concerned about the economy, government spending and the “Fiscal Cliff” our nation faces. As such, I’m sure you can appreciate the surprise many feel when hearing about unusual or unexpected government spending.

This week Jim McElhatton of the Washington Times wrote an article titled “Picture This: Cabinet Portraits For Big Bucks” – which got us thinking – we can help the government save money!

Sample Portrait of President Obama

We write this as an open offer to help the government realign spending on portraiture. We in no way intend to imply that portraits of outgoing Cabinet and top administration appointees are unimportant; to the contrary we are fans of art in all formats. We do however suggest that we can provide a model for saving money on this program.

As an example, the article notes that the Environmental Protection Agency spent approximately $40,000 on a portrait of Administrator Lisa P. Jackson. CafePress can offer similar museum quality art at a savings of 99%. The math breaks down as follows:

  • Government commissioned price: $40,000
  • CafePress/Canvas on Demand 36X48” canvas – $350 (including shipping)
  • Savings – $39,650 or 99%

In addition to cost savings, we can offer speedy service – no more waiting 8-14 months for delivery! All we’ll need to get going is a high-resolution photograph of each official, license to digitally manipulate that photo to create the desired artistic effect, and we can deliver finished art in less than one week.

Last, I would like to add that all canvas art created by CafePress and Canvas on Demand is Made in America, so each portrait purchase from the government helps the economy and helps keep jobs in America.

If you are interested in learning more or discussing this cost savings plan we can be reached at (502) 995-2220.

Sincerely,

CafePress

Captain’s Log: Press It! “Most Pressed” Contest Winner Takes Grand Prize

Rebecca, of West Virginia-based Magic Garden Designs, is the Grand Prize Winner of CafePress’ hugely successful “Most Pressed” Contest. Despite tough competition, Rebecca’s design took off – boldly going where no designer had gone before—to the top of Most-Pressed product board. Congrats Rebecca!

Trek_mug

Tea.Earl.Grey

What’s Rebecca’s secret to topping the CafePress Pressboard™ page charts with her out-of-this-world Star Trek™ TNG mug? CafePress got details on her inspiration for the cleverly nuanced design that rewarded her with a brand new iPad!

Rebecca says her boyfriend, a self-proclaimed Trekkie, was her muse for the design. She says he “really wanted a Captain Picard mug.” To embody the essence of the revered character, Rebecca strategically wrapped the mug’s white background in a design inspired by Picard’s uniform then accented it with Captain’s-rank gold buttons and badge. Because Picard is admired for his quotable moments, such as “Engage,” “You have the bridge Number One,” and of course, his well-known beverage machine order, “Tea. Earl Grey. Hot”, Rebecca says it seemed fitting to include it on her Star Trek-inspired mug.

Rebecca is “thrilled” to have won the Press It contest Grand Prize. She says to secure this win, she rallied everyone she knew to “Press” her captain’s mug to the CafePress Pressboards— tweeting, posting to Facebook, emailing…you name it. “I LOVE my new iPad and I’m excited about the marketing suite for Magic Garden Designs,” which will help her continue to build on the success of her CafePress store.

The CafePress Pressboards are “forward-thinking,” says Rebecca. “It gives me the ability to see which of my designs people want to Press, and I find inspiration from other designers’ Pressed products. It helps me track what’s trending (and what’s not) so it keeps me current.”

Captain’s Log: Will Rebecca rally her friends and fans to keep “Pressing” now that the contest is over? “LOL, absolutely!”
