Hold the peanut butter

salmonella peanut butter tshirtPeanut butter is a classic American staple.  Unfortunately, a massive peanut butter recall now has parents wondering if they should find a lunch bag alternative for their kids.

An outbreak of salmonella caused the nationwide recall.  The affected nuts seem to be isolated to the King Nut brand of peanut butter from the Peanut Corporation of America facility, which produces and sells peanut butters and pastes to a variety of wholesale buyers and food manufacturers – both human and pet.

The American Peanut Council also has an updated list of brands not affected by the FDA recall. So far, our most well-known brands of commercial peanut butter aren’t affected – so if your kids are set on their Skippy ‘n Smuckers on Wonder Bread you shouldn’t have to do any parental gymnastics to talk them into a tuna sandwich instead.

  1. I’ve heard bits and piece of this story but hadn’t stopped to really read it until now. Good thing it wasn’t the major brands, especially since I wasn’t listening to which it was to begin with.

    I love Peanut Butter!

  2. With all the children affected by severe peanut allergies, parents should be finding an alternative for their children’s school lunches anyway. For children with a nut allergy, the peanut butter is lethal whether it has salmonella or not. As the grandma of an adorable five year old with a severe peanut allergy, I’ll sign off by saying…
    I hate Peanut Butter!

  3. We’ve always purchased fresh ground peanut butter. It’s the most pure and safest to enjoy.
